What is the mySF Project Piki?

The mySF Project Piki is a collaborative, independent, discussion of Science Fiction (SF) texts suitable for secondary school students and the activities and curricula to best suit these students. In addition to providing discussion space on texts, authors and directors, the mySF Project Piki also features a discussion on the five themes of the mySF Project (http://www.pataphysics.net.au/mysf_project/index.html) for those involved with secondary students studying SF. The themes covered are:

Theme areas:

The enemy within Aliens
Fate & predestination Time travel
Oh, brave new world! Genetic engineering
The ghost in the shell Artificial intelligence
The shape of things to come Visions of the future

If you would like to look through the ten learning episodes for the different theme areas, you can find them here (http://www.pataphysics.net.au/mysf_project/mysf_themes/index.html).

The mySF Project is a Creative Commons based site that looks at the best ways to work with secondary school students studying Science Fiction (SF). The mySF Project has a definite bias towards Hard SF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_SF) but does focus on appropriate texts (movies and writings) for the age range of thirteen to sixteen years.

The mySF Project features the mySF Project Blog (http://www.pataphysics.net.au/mysf_project/mysf_project_blog) and the enclosed podcasts there. The point of the whole mySF Project is for educators to collaborate in teaching SF to secondary students: to share ideas, curricula plans, content and their successes and failures.

mySF Piki is open and editable

The books, films, authors, anthologies and curriculum documents discussed in the mySF Piki are open for the reader to edit. Your contributions to the different entries as well as the creation of new pages are most welcome and are the only reason for the existence of the mySF Piki.

  • By the way - a 'piki' is a thin, moist lizard skin rolled tight over a crunchy core of dried flowers from Moreau-12. It is made by the best traditional food retailers but is indigenous to Arena-4, in the star system NGE340 (http://en.galaxiki.org/cgi-bin/local/perl/galaxiki/wiki.pl?mode=star&id=1264340&coord_x=96&coord_y=31&level=3), called by Earthers the 'Chi-2 system' after the Siege of the Zufitos in 306CUE. It derives its blue-grey colour from baking in a carbon-based ash.
