Quality Teaching image and link to the collaborations pageNotes here were made by Anne during the first focus class, with the class of English,
Year 8, Level 1 in mid-morning, 19 November, 2009. Anne's notes follow based
exactly from her observations of student/teacher discussion during the focus class,
written as dot points:

Reminders of the last class - looked at the depressing post-apocalyptic quotes

What did they mean? What were the main ideas?

Tells the class only a pen is required.

Duty of humans after catastrophe - repopulate, survive

Ethical - moral duty

We kill in order to live

Running movies - answer the questions on the sheet

Try to find out what the message is - especially the last two categories on the sheet

'Last Man on Earth' - Vincent Price

'Omega Man' - another last man on Earth - Charlton Heston

Survivors stay/ work together to survive

'The World, the Flesh and the Devil'

Racial conflict, who will get the girl? Who will repopulate? Life continues as usual, music and all

'The Quiet Earth'

"The end of the world is just the beginning". Two band together to help the world survive.

Visual literacy - you work it out from what you see.

'I am Legend' - Will Smith: routine, recreation, survival

"God didn't do this, we did".

Text for his thoughts, "I am the last human alive".

Five minutes to reflect with your neighbour and compare results.

Results:

Results from around the room

Was there disagreement?

What was hardest to fill out? Look at what the survivors learnt about themselves and their worlds".

Themes and purposes:

Look at themes collected in the exercise

Five minutes to discuss themes to make a statement about them

Write a summative paragraph on back of sheet

Themes and purposes of post-apocalyptic fiction

What are writers and directors teaching their audiences?

Ask questions around room to see what they came up with. Ask clarifying questions.

On back of sheet, one paragraph about something that combined all the movies, about the themes and purposes of the movie.

Cluster ideas:

To see if they all had the same ideas with 'Inspiration'

Survival, make you feel as if you are in a situation, warning about the future; what would you do to survive, what will you do to help mankind survive; trying to get money

Deep knowledge:
