The Quality Teaching project has been underway in various parts of Australia
for some time. Government schools in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
joined New South Wales in adopting this model quite recently.
Teachers in most systems and in most countries know a good deal about new
teaching models introduced at
the system level. The Quality Teaching model has a long history with many
earlier models revised and
built upon to the current state. Those interested in the model will find
citations for the main documents circulated
in ACT government schools noted in the Resource
List section, below.
Because of copyright and intellectual property issues, and also because the
Quality Teaching model is not
widespread in the context of international teaching models, the details of
the process for this Quality Teaching Lesson Study, called here the Focus
Class, are not available on this page. Instead, the general process of the
Focus Class system and the particular dimensions used for Anne and Michael's
classes are seen, below.
Before dealing with the process of the Focus Classes, it is important for
this writer to note that the model used and derived from the ACT Quality
Teaching section was seen as beneficial and useful. Both Anne and Michael
evaluated the process strongly after they had planned, collaborated on their
Focus Class, delivered the classes and then evaluated them.
Process of the Focus Classes
The basic idea of the Quality Teacher implementation was to take just one
class and look at it in detail, seeing where the class fitted into the
Quality Teaching model.
There was discussion of the class to be taught, on the basis that the
principles of the Quality Teaching model were applied and the pair of
teachers, in this case Michael and Anne, worked collaboratively using the QT
model on that focus class.
During the delivery of the focus class
(the class notes can be
seen here) the partner teacher took notes on the class, looking at it
through the lens of the model and rating the class according to an agreed
coding system that came with the model.
Next, the focus class is discussed in another meeting between the pair of
teachers, with a view to changing the class process to accommodate a
different group of students, given by the partner of the original teacher.
In this case, Michael started with a Focus Class and then Anne gave her
Focus Class.
The coding system is used for both Focus Classes and discussed before a
final, documented class is created that built upon the best aspects of the
classes given, again through the lens of the QT model.
All parts of the process required consultation between the pair of teachers
and various officers from the system were available to support this process.
Teachers were given time to consult, plan and rewrite, as well as to code
the delivered class according to the model. Responses to this collaboration
and coding were recorded and the whole process evaluated with a final survey
sent to system officers responsible for the QT model.
In this case the whole process was documented in this website.

this particular use of the QT model, please click on this link.
